Lembaran Sejarah is a bilingual academic and peer-reviewed journal on Indonesian and regional history of Southeast Asia. It is part of a long tradition of journal publication of the Department of History at Universitas Gadjah Mada from the 1960s. The journal embraces articles on Indonesian history and historiography and comparative studies that places Indonesian history within local, regional and global contexts. We welcome researchers from any background fields to submit their research articles, book and film reviews in accordance with the journal focus and scope in English and Indonesian. Currently, Lembaran Sejarah accredited in Sinta 4 of Arjuna (Indonesian Indexing Journal).

Abstract

This research tries to answer two main questions. First, what was the reason for the nationalization of dangdut in 1990s period. Second, how was the discourse taken place and who benefited from the nationalization of the popular music. History method is applied in this research, by using sources, such as, magazines, newspapers, books, scientific works, which are spread in several places. The main inventions of this research are, firstly, the nationalization of dangdut was strongly related to the development of dangdut in the 1970’s to 1990’s periods. Secondly, the strategy of the regime to nationalize dangdut in the middle 1990s was conducted through supporting the development of positive dangdut. Third, the nationatization of dangdut in the 1990s benefited both the New Order regime and dangdut itself.

Abstract

This research discusses about the social economic history of Yogyakarta during 1950s. The main problem is to analyze how the newly independent country of Indonesia dealt with unemployment after the revolutionary period. This research employs the historical method using primary and secondary sources, such as archives, newspapers, magazines, interviews, and reviews of relevant references. There are four conclusions in this research. First, although the period was called as the period of creating jobs, the unemployment number in early 1950s was increasing. Second, this unemployment problem was not primarily caused by the economic condition but also by demographic problems and the legacies from the Revolution Era. Third, people who were categorized as unemployed were not only labors, but also veterans. Fourth, for the government, solving this unemployment problem was the effort to create economic improvement for its society.

Abstract

This essay examines Hoso Kanri Kyoku, a bureau of radio centre and regulation, which has been much underestimated and understudied. It became an instrument of mass mobilization and mass psychology in the Japanese occupation period. The essay sees also the pivotal role of this institution in disseminating ideas of ‘ke-Indonesiaan’. The aim of this essay is to show how the transformation process of the institution after the proclamation of Indonesian independence. The essay uses historical archival research as a method of data collection. This essay have indirectly presented that the Soeharto regime continued the legacy of the Japanese Military regime in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research examines the social interaction amongst the fishers and the porters in the Muara Angke region. Muara Angke is a region which is on the north coast of Jakarta. Due to its fisheries potential, fishing activity has become the main livelihood of the people there. In 1977, the concentration of Jakarta’s fishing activity in the region has made it the center of traditional fishery in Jakarta. Yet, the concentration of fishing activity conducted in Muara Angke failed to provide economic improvement and most people remain under the poverty line. The root of poverty Muara Angke’s fishery community were multidimensional involving social, economic, and political aspects.

Abstract

After the rise of nationalist movement, the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) was one of the disciplined organizations in Indonesia. PKI has become the primary example in understanding how organized movements transformed after Indonesia’s independence. Ruth McVey’s assessment that the PKI as being the most organized organization is not excessive. When the PKI was revamped in the early 1950, it conducted political education through translation and publication work. In various cities they conducted research in order to understand the social contexts to determine the party’s political programs. In various cities they did research that had a purpose to understand the social context in order to determine the party’s political program, including one of the important areas was Jakarta. Politic contestation in Jakarta was not always interpreted with the struggle for mastery hegemonic discourse. Although in the period of 1950-1965 the discourse struggle was involved the three big powers, nationalists, Islamist and communists. This idea was just organized by chief of these organizations that was located in Jakarta. In addition, Jakarta has major problems in meeting the everyday needs of its population. Thus, the existence of PKI in Jakarta does not always play practical issues, but also advocated populist issues as well.
